Counting Our Losses: Recycled Waste Energy

In life, we have all encountered a certain situation where the loss seemed to outweigh the gain. From these and other experiences, many of us have learned to follow the age old idiom that advises us to “cut your losses”, and simply move on. The Recycled Energy Development, also known as RED, is an organization that works to develop projects that reduce the amount of greenhouse emissions from production plants. One such project involves the concept of recycled waste energy. Typically speaking, a power plant usually requires three units of fuel to create one simple unit of electricity, thereby operating an efficiency rate of thirty three percent. Due to this very small amount of energy efficiency, sixty seven percent of the energy used simply escapes into the atmosphere. ‘Tis unfortunate, since this matter which is referred to as “waste energy” could be put to good use elsewhere. With this problem in mind, RED is working on a project that encourages production plants to make use of a “waste heat recovery boiler”. The title is pretty self-explanatory, as the device works to capture any waste heat (or waste energy) that is released within a production plant, and convert it back into electricity. The electricity can then be used to power other operations within the plant. RED has conducted studies which show that this process could generate up to forty percent of the electricity needs within the country.
