Fair Play for All

For many, one of the most emphasized concepts during the course of childhood was the concept of playing fair. At times, this message was communicated through a meaningful glance from a parent; one meant to direct you to share a snack with a younger sibling. At others, it was a lecture from a teacher on the necessity of sharing turns on the swing at the school playground. Regardless of the method of delivery, the message was the same: make sure every one has a fair share, or equal advantage in each opportunity. Unlike childhood notions such as Santa or the tooth fairy, the concept of playing fair is one that should not lose its appeal during adulthood.
The importance of this sentiment is reflected through the designation of Saturday, May 14th as World Fair Trade Day. If you find a moment of mental leisure, I urge you to turn your mind towards the concept of fair trade. It refers to a standard of practices that encourage integrity, from start to end of the process of producing and distributing goods. These practices encourage mindful thought, as well as consideration for the well-being of those involved in all aspects of consumption; the environment, the producer, as well as the consumer. Acts of integrity, mindful thought, and consideration are ones that should be woven into the patterns of all our purchases, as well as our practices. Let’s never forget the importance of playing fair in all aspects of life. Happy World Fair Trade Day.
