What are your plans for this Saturday night? A romantic dinner by candlelight perhaps or a night dancing in NYC? Either one would be wonderful but keep in mind that a global event will be going down this Saturday night. This Saturday, March 26th is the annual global celebration of Earth Hour, between 8:30pm and 9:30pm (local time). The World Wildlife Fund has hosted Earth Hour since 2007 and this massive event can be participated in anywhere and continues to grow.
Earth Hour was started in Sydney, Australia to highlight climate change and positive initiatives that our global community can do alone and together. Individuals, businesses, governments and communities are invited to turn out their lights for one hour and longer if they so choose to. WWF is one of the most respected conservation organizations in the world, boasting nearly five million supporters in more than one hundred countries. WWF’s mission includes protecting our natural environment, building a future in which humans live in harmony with nature. WWF also focused its efforts on the conservation of the world’s biological diversity, promoting the use of renewable natural resources, and reduction of pollution and wasteful consumption. Their support of Earth Hour is second nature, and you should follow.
In the United States, over ninety million Americans will be participating in over three hundred cities including Atlanta, Chicago, Dallas, Las Vegas, Los Angeles, Miami, New York City and San Francisco. Celebrities are great for getting the word out and Earth Hour supporters include Tom Brady, Edward Norton, Cate Blanckett, Victoria’s Secret model Miranda Kerr, South African Archbishop Desmond Tutu, and Italian soccer star Francesco Totti all encouraging others to participate. “Earth Hour is a great time for celebrities and high profile individuals to use their considerable reach and influence to spotlight the issues that are facing our planet. This year more than ever we are asking these celebrities to not only encourage their fans and supporters to participate in lights off, moreover we’re asking them to commit to an action to take Earth Hour beyond the hour”, said Andy Ridley, Co-Founder and Executive Director of Earth Hour.
The state of New York has even signed on as an official Earth Hour State. Iconic landmarks will be turning off their lights across the world including Mount Rushmore, Eiffel Tower, Niagara Falls, Big Ben in London, The Golden Gate Bridge, and our treasured Empire State Building. Major corporations and television networks have signed up to participate including Coca-Cola, IKEA, HSBC, Nokia, and the Cartoon Network.
The major goal of Earth Hour is to bring people together across the world in one eco-friendly event, but also go beyond Earth Hour, and use energy saving, earth friendly practices in our daily lives. Beyond the Hour platform is an opportunity to share your stories and get inspiration from the actions of others. Mahatma Gandhi famously once said, “Be the change you want to see in the world.” Now is your opportunity to do so.
