Trees: Symbols of Sustainablity

As humans, we are fortunate enough to co-exist among various forms of life that thrive in ways so different from our own. Though we have deemed ourselves as the superior form of life, there is much to be learned from the “silent life” that exists in the air, the water, and the trees around us. A great thinker expressed this notion so clearly when she wrote, “very few humans manage what nature manages without effort, much less without fail.” Although this thinker may not have had trees in mind when she uttered those words, our tall woody counterparts are a great example of the natural grace of life. In addition to being am example of life that is completely sustainable, trees also contribute to the existence of countless living organisms through the provision of oxygen. Research shows that a single tree can produce enough oxygen to provide sustenance for approximately ten people for an entire year. For this, and many other reasons, April 29th has been deemed as Arbor Day, a day to realize and appreciate the importance of trees in our lives. Take this opportunity to join a local organization that aims to maintain or plant trees in your community. Also, keep in mind that we are firmly planted in the middle of the International Year of Forests. If you have kids, teach them about the importance of trees; if not, go for a hike and familiarize yourself with the different types of trees that thrive in your area. The significance of celebrating this, or any other sustainable holiday is not confined to one day alone; be sure to develop practices that will continually remind you of the importance of all things sustainable. Happy Arbor Day!
