Bergen County About
Bergen County: A Home on the Hill
Bergen County is a region that will suit the tastes of anyone who enjoys different textures of life. Whether you’re a budding conservationist looking to grab a sustainable, organic meal at a “green café” or a traditional enthusiast hoping to spend some time at a nature preserve, Bergen County is the place to be.
Derived from the Dutch word “berg”, which means “hilly or mountainous region,” the county is home to rolling hills and vast areas of pure beauty. Weighing in as the most populous county in the state, Bergen County is home to roughly 895,000 residents. And the merits don’t stop there…
Bergen County proudly boasts organizations such as the Pascack Valley Sustainability Group, a non-profit organization whose mission is to “encourage and promote environmental responsibility and sustainable practices”.
And let’s not forget the Hackensack River Keeper, who aims to “protect and defend the quality of the eco-system” of the Hackensack River watershed.
Parks & Recreation
Home to twenty one parks and nine historic sites, Bergen County has many outdoor recreation areas for adults and children alike. A few of these areas are listed below:
Bergen County Zoological Park
Not only is this venue a great alternative to the traditional day of playing in the park, the members of this facility are devoted to both education and conservation. A member of the Zoo Conservation Outreach program, the Bergen county zoological park has many programs where adults and children can learn about wildlife.
Tenafly Nature Center
The Tenafly Nature Center, a non-profit nature preserve, allows the residents of Bergen County the opportunity to make an impact on their environment. Through programs such as “Sponsor a Species” and the Center’s Marine Biology Eco tour to the Caribbean, residents are giving back to the environment one step at a time.
Palisades Interstate Park
The Palisade Interstate Park offers a variety of activities ranging from ski trails, lectures, and a historic site. The park is also home to many volunteer opportunities including the “State Line Fall Hawk Watch” which provides volunteers the opportunity to work with local nature centers.
