New York (Manhattan) County About

Manhattan County – Empire State

Manhattan County – Empire State

Manhattan County, the smallest yet third-largest in population of the five boroughs of New York City, is also identified as a rich source of cultural, historical, social, and biological diversity. Derived from Manna-hata, a Dutch version of a Lenape place-name, it has been translated as "island of many hills."

Although Manhattan is home to many famous landmarks and tourist attractions, including the headquarters of the United Nations, the island also brags 50+ environmental organizations (most incorporating urban environmentalism into their programs), 50+ Greenmarkets, 30+ Community Gardens, 40+ Parks, and 50+ Vegetarian Restaurants, this is just a taste of what Manhattan has to offer to any green-minded individual.

It also helps to have Mayor Michael R. Bloomberg and the implementation of PlaNYC's 127 initiatives to create a greater and greener New York City, with help of The Mayor's Office of Long-Term Planning & Sustainability, 20+ City agencies, the City's Sustainability Advisory Board, partners and supporters from all across New York City, and close cooperation with the City Council and other elected officials.

Manhattan. There’s always something happening. And as the wise actress and New York City resident Myrna Loy said, “If you're bored in New York, it's your own fault.”
