Morris County Farmers Markets, Enjoying Being A Locavore

In the peak of summer, we all are frantically trying to plan and hold on to the few remaining weeks of summer events. Or you are waiting (or dreading) for that glorious first day of school. From barbeques to days at the beach to lounging by a lake, these days are precious and steadily dwindling into fall.

One of my favorite summer activities in between the swimming and the sweating is shopping for fresher than fresh produce at farmers markets. Many feature home grown artisan bread, cheeses, produce, baked goods, and meats that you didn’t even realize where made two blocks from your house. There are a number of them within our own towns that we don’t realize they are there until you literally drive into one of them on your way trying to find a partying space.

Being a locavore (defined as being like omnivore, but eating local food) the summer is the best season for fresh, local produce, baked goods, meats, and dairy. Morris County has many local farms and farmers markets in our own backyard. One of my favorites and closest is the Denville Farmer’s Market, and their mission is to, “provide locally grown fresh, high value produce and specialty foods. The Denville Farmers Market is a healthy community event that brings traffic to downtown, introduces both farm and non farm local businesses to the community, and enhances the Township of Denville’s sustainability as a community.”
The following is a short list of where and when in Morris County, but check them out for yourself. This is a great green imitative to support local food but also local businesses. You will be pleasantly surprised at how fresh your food can be.
